West Ham in fresh move to land top target David Moyes
Exclusive: Former Manchester United manager has been approached over job if Sam Allardyce goes

West Ham United have made a fresh move to try to secure an agreement from David Moyes to succeed Sam Allardyce as their next manager.

West Ham made Moyes their number one target to replace Allardyce in February and investigated whether the Scotsman could be convinced to leave Real Sociedad. It is understood that West Ham have now made a more direct approach to Moyes, with the Scotsman being told he is first choice to lead the club into the Olympic Stadium.

Rafael Benítez and Slaven Bilic are on a list of alternative targets to Moyes, but West Ham are committed to pursuing the former Everton and Manchester United manager until they are given a definitive answer.

West Ham hope their conviction will convince Moyes to take advantage of an agreement with Sociedad that he can speak to Premier League clubs about a return to England.

Moyes only took over at Sociedad in November and is happy at the club and with his life in Spain. He is also grateful for the chance the La Liga club have given him.

But West Ham hope to tempt Moyes with the Olympic Stadium move and the promise of an ambitious list of summer transfer targets drawn up by Tony Henry, his former Everton scout. Henry, who worked closely with Moyes at Goodison Park, has been put in charge of West Ham’s transfer business and has already registered an £8 million bid for Sampdoria midfielder Pedro Obiang.

The Hammers are also interested in Real Madrid’s on-loan Champions League goalscoring hero Javier Hernández, Sion’s Moussa Konaté and Basel defender Fabian Schär.

The level of trust put in Henry by co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold has only added weight to the theories that Allardyce will not be offered a new contract at the end of the season. Henry never visits the West Ham training ground to discuss targets or transfer strategy with Allardyce, instead only reporting directly to Sullivan and Gold. There have even been unconfirmed reports that Henry was banned from the first-team base at Chadwell Heath by Allardyce.

West Ham insist that Allardyce’s future will not be decided until Sullivan and Gold have carried out their annual end-of-season review and the prospect of handing the 60-year-old a new deal has not yet been ruled out.

But Allardyce’s chances of keeping his job have become slimmer with each week as West Ham have slipped from fourth to 10th in the table.

Sullivan and Gold ideally want a manager with Premier League experience, who has challenged for trophies and the top four, to succeed Allardyce. The pair feel Moyes fits that profile.

Allardyce is not the only man at West Ham whose future has been the subject of debate. Their impressive left-back, Aaron Cresswell, has emerged as a target for Manchester City and Chelsea.

But asked whether the 25-year-old would be wise to stay at Upton Park, Allardyce said: “There’s no doubt about that because he’s year one in the Premier League. Year one is an ongoing experience that you have that you know the level.

“Aaron now needs to grow from that experience. His challenge is to continue to work even harder than this year, not to rest on his laurels.

“We have seen players do that and then year two is more of a disaster than his impressive first year. His professionalism will come into play at the start of next year by where he gets and if he gets to the next level.

“As far as I am concerned, nobody has bid for Aaron Cresswell. It’s all pure rumours and speculation. My problem is does it affect Aaron Cresswell and affect his performance?

“That’s for me to make sure Aaron does what he can all season and he performs on a consistent basis. What will happen in the summer, we will wait and see. I have even heard somebody said we have put a £25 million buy-out on him. That’s the first I know, I haven’t heard anything through the owners to say if somebody wants Aaron Cresswell they would have to pay £25 million”.

I think if he is under pressure like he is now at the end of season we should try.

Unlikely, but I'd like to be aiming high before we resort to managers like Moyes

The Acadmey and youth is ultimately down to the owners but they have to leave first team selection to the manager. If he refuses to blood youth players and provide them with the appropriate opportunities to develop, then there's not much the owners can do other than to sack him. Hopefully they will.

If (IF) it was then only one winner. But it's not.

Also if that list is truely the owners list then they are utterly clueless

Southon is now saying Michael Laudrup is also a candidate in addition to Moyes, Bilic and Klopp. Benitez showing no interest in us.
Allardyce will apparently only be considered as a last resort if all the above reject our advances.
Nice to feel wanted Samuel?

Agree and disagree

Yes they have overall responsibility, but it doesn't matter how it is run if you have a maanger who won't progress anyone.

agree ,

I don't imagine it was Allardyce that bought in Westley to revamp the youth system lately, it would ahve been the owners who clearly didn't feel it was performing properly

Re: West Ham in fresh move to land top target David Moyes
I might be alone in this opinion but to me the academy and youth development is down to the owners. Very few managers these days are responsible for all football things root and branch at a club. Indeed only Wenger comes to mind as having that sort of power. Scouting, procuring, coaching and developing young players requires money and continuity of purpose. To me that is definitely an ownership responsibility.

Let's criticise BFS by all means but at the same time acknowledge that certain things are not down to him, or any recent WHU manager come to that.

It is down to our owners to address the academy issues regardless of who manages us imho.

Alex,

To some extent I agree with you. I wouldn't call it irrevocably backwards, as nothing is irrevocable, but there would need to be a stated and focussed objective from on high (up there with first team performance) to take what many of us consider back in the right direction .

Whether the Chairmen have that desire/will, or are happy to live in the relatively short term until their tenure ends is to be seen I guess.

I don't see that we can afford to be more like a poor mans Man City...buying for the first team and short term, and some of our more recent signings indicate that. But they need to get a manager who is on the same page as them.

Spot on and exactly why i'm not hopeful they'll get the next appointment right

Re: West Ham in fresh move to land top target David Moyes
Frankly, if Sullivan and Gold really cared about 'good football' they would have sacked the current manager three years ago.

I have to go back with this problem with 'successful' managers. As soon as they become successful they're automatically in line for the top jobs, so even if we did get them at vast expense they might only last a season before being poached. It's the same as players, except when a player has to be sold they don't generally uproot the whole philosophy of a club in the process.

I think Allardyce has taken the club irrevocably backwards in terms of playing style and youth development and philosophy. But we've been stable, and that has almost made up for the downsides. There's a lot to be said for stability. It should be a massive factor in what the club do next.

To be fair Darby, we have sort of been crap for most of our lifetimes anyway, but it's Sam the person who really pisses me off.

Just has no respect for the fans.

Re: West Ham in fresh move to land top target David Moyes
Surely our criteria should be a manager who has been successful playing good football.

That surely includes someone like Rogers were Liverpool to get rid, maybe even Monk at Swansea, and the likes of Bielsa.

Trouble with Moyes is not that he isn't a good manager, but that he's from a previous era. European managers have been ahead of us, and our new breed of coaches coming through are only just catching on

If I could pick any manager at all for our current situation it would be Wenger. A man with principles about the way the game should be played, a preference for bringing through youth and developing a team, and content working to unearth talent rather than sign the finished article.

Given he will never be available to us, we should be looking for a man in his image/mould. Moyes that is not.

The biggest shame really for me is that Zola didn't work out. He at least had the right principles and focus on team development. It just didn't happen...wouldn't have surprised me if he'd been more successfull now given the abject shit he had to work with, but he was the last player for me who at least you felt had the right principles in place. Never bad mouthed the club or fans, never had a pop at the players in public, conducted himself well.

As for those linked, Bielsa seems to fit most with our club. A bit of a loon, his teams are fantastic to watch, aggressive, and play a high pressure pressing game. He'd probably even be able to work as a coach rather than all-controlling manager which seems to be the way Sullivan wants to take it with the Henry appointment and other teams have done given managers come and go but its unsustainable to change the whole squad each time.

Moyes would be a safe, lazy appointment, based on the fact his British, wouldn't get us relegated and 'did well at Everton and managed Man Utd' without any real deeper analysis of his football, philosophy or whether he's a good fit for us. Unfortunately, Sullivan and Gold don't seem like 'detail orientated' types.
